The Sheep Detectives Review: It Was Surely Three Bags Full

If you ever fell asleep while counting sheep, well, this movie is here to kick you awake with some incessant "BAAA" and an intriguing murder mystery where the detective is but a sheep. Well, technically, sheep (fact: the plural of a sheep is sheep).

Written by iconic author Leonie Swann, Three Bags Full became a clever, satirical novel that highlighted the importance of sheep while seamlessly blending the Agatha Christie-esque plot with a murder.

Being a cult-favorite cozy mystery, Three Bags Full isn't a simple novel. Instead, it shines with its clever, philosophical, and witty subversion of traditional detective fiction. The Sheep Detectives, in this case, is no different.

The Sheep Detectives: The Title Reveals The Plot, Doesn't It?

Shepherd George (Hugh Jackman) is the classic shepherd that any sheep would love to have. While setting up what a "winter lamb" is, George is found dead in an Irish meadow under mysterious circumstances.

With Lily (the primary protagonist) unable to comprehend what "death" means for humans, it is up to her and her flock to figure out the killer since the local police are of no great help. Thus starts the premise of The Sheep Detectives, and one that stays with you till the end.

With one shepherd dead, we are introduced to the local suspects that might have had a hand (or both hands) in the murder of George. Although fans were expecting to see sheep holding a magnifying glass, it is rather the fact that the sheep help the local police by trying to solve the crime themselves.

From running amok wearing a green-stained T-shirt to putting together the entire timeline of events, the sheep solved the mystery. However, there was something much more interesting about how the sheep viewed humans.

The Sheep Are Here To Stay

From philosophical talks to a deeper juxtaposition between humans and sheep, The Sheep Detectives presents itself as a meta movie wherein the sheep know what is going to happen. It's almost as if a divine intervention is felt when Lily and Mopple stumble upon clues that the police are too dumb to understand.

With Lily helming the movie as the most brilliant sheep, we are also introduced to Mopple (who cannot forget anything), Sebastian (the winter lamb), Ronnie and Reggie (the rambunctious twins), as well as a plethora of characters.

The movie, however, delves deeper into what sheep think of the world. From being afraid of stepping on a road to solving a murder mystery with nothing but their brains, the movie takes a subtle dig at humans, who think that they are the smartest species of them all.

With malice and greed as the main motive for the murder, the viewpoint of the suspects is a drastic change from the sheep's innocence and wanting to solve the murder in the name of love. Similar to other films (like Good Boy), The Sheep Detectives once again prove the point that humans do have a lot to learn from our neighbors eating the grass beside us.

The Sheep Detectives Excel At Subverting The Genre

It is usually a middle-aged detective who solves the case at the final moment. However, The Sheep Detectives subverted the entire genre by simply replacing the species of the protagonist. By putting sheep at the center of this murder mystery, all the glossy detective skills and the swag of a detective cane were stripped off.

Instead, we were given a flock of sheep, and that was arguably the best thing about this movie (except Hugh Jackman, of course). The movie was humorous at times, alongside being poignant, as well as suspenseful.

Never did I imagine bawling my eyes out in a murder mystery, since we know someone's about to get murdered. However, the death of Sebastian left me wondering about all the animals on this good-old Earth.

The slow-burn tension added that classic detective feel, and the suspense was almost unpredictable until the last moment. Naturally, I did not expect a movie about sheep to blow my mind, but then, it did. And I feel even happier for it. Sheep are indeed... wonderful creatures.

To Conclude, Sheep Are The GOAT

The sharp humor, the satirical takes on humans, and the poignant reminders of why life is beautiful are something that I did not expect to see while watching The Sheep Detectives. However, in a world filled with murder mysteries, the 2026 movie clearly takes place among the top 10 for me.

From George's musings on why it is important to remember the memories to Lily finally solving this case because of it, The Sheep Detectives is a comfort movie that I'd love to watch all over again.
