The Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) has announced that two cookie varieties will be retired following the 2025 cookie season. The decision was shared in a news release coinciding with the start of the organization's much-anticipated annual "cookie season."
"While we celebrate the lineup of beloved classics like Thin Mints, Samoas (Caramel deLites), and Peanut Butter Patties (Tagalongs), we also embrace change to pave the way for fresh and exciting offerings," stated the GSUSA.
Saying Goodbye to Girl Scout S'mores and Toast-Yay!
Room for Innovation in the Cookie Lineup

At the close of the 2025 season, the Girl Scout S'mores and Toast-Yay! cookies will officially retire. A GSUSA spokesperson emphasized that the decision is part of a routine evaluation of their lineup, a process aimed at creating opportunities for new flavors to emerge.
"Introducing innovations often means saying goodbye to past favorites," the spokesperson explained. "Discontinuing Toast-Yay! and Girl Scout S'mores opens the door to something new and delicious."
The Girl Scout S'mores debuted in 2017, while Toast-Yay! cookies joined the lineup more recently in 2021. Despite their popularity, no new cookie flavors will be added for the 2025 season, which runs until April.
Beyond Cookies: Empowering Girls Through Leadership
The Bigger Purpose Behind Cookie Sales

While the cookies themselves are iconic, Wendy Lou, Chief Revenue Officer of GSUSA, highlighted that the program represents much more than just sweet treats. "Cookie sales directly fuel girls' journeys in leadership, entrepreneurship, and community building," Lou shared in the news release.
"The success of each sale is a powerful testament to how much girls can achieve when they set their minds to it," she added.
A Century of Tradition and Kicks Off in January 2025
How Girl Scout Cookies Have Evolved Over Time

The tradition of selling Girl Scout cookies stretches back more than a century, evolving from simple bake sales to a nationally recognized fundraising initiative. Today, cookie season remains a cornerstone of the Girl Scout experience, offering opportunities for skill development and personal growth.
The much-anticipated Girl Scout cookie season officially began during the week of January 6, 2025. For over a century, Girl Scout cookies have been a staple of community fundraising, evolving from humble beginnings to become an iconic tradition.
A Legacy of Homemade Treats

From Kitchen Creations to National Phenomenon
The origins of Girl Scout cookies trace back to when young members baked cookies at home under the guidance of their mothers, who acted as advisors. According to the Girl Scouts website, the first recorded cookie sales took place in 1917, just five years after the organization was established in the United States.
By the 1920s, Girl Scout cookie sales had spread across the country, cementing their place as a cornerstone of troop activities.
In July 1922, The American Girl magazine, published by the Girl Scouts of the USA, featured a cookie recipe contributed by Florence E. Neil, a local director from Chicago, Illinois. The recipe was shared with 2,000 Girl Scouts and recommended selling the cookies at a price of 25 to 30 cents per dozen—a modest yet significant step in the evolution of Girl Scout cookie sales.
Modern Cookie Sales: From Tradition to Convenience

Adapting to the Times
Today, Girl Scout cookies are more accessible than ever. Customers can purchase them online or through local, in-person sales. Depending on the region, cookie boxes are priced as high as $6.
The cookies are produced by two official bakeries, ABC Bakers and Little Brownie Bakers. These bakeries use different branding for identical cookies, resulting in variations in cookie names based on location.
Each Girl Scout council independently determines the start and end dates for cookie sales within their area, as well as the pricing of the cookies. This flexibility ensures that the program reflects the unique needs of local communities while preserving its longstanding traditions.
