HBO's A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set for a January 2026 release, but it could backfire since House of the Dragon hasn't ended yet!
HBOās latest update is the confirmation of the upcoming show A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Being the third show set in the Game of Thrones universe, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is one of the most anticipated shows at the moment.
However, things could very easily backfire for HBO Entertainment if they arenāt careful about it. The story is brief, but the explanation can get quite intense (since we are hardcore fans of George R.R. Martinās world). So, buckle up, wear your Dragon-riding glasses, as we take a dive into how A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms could probably be the best thing that HBO ever created⦠or the biggest mistake that they will ever make.
Based on the collection of novellas by George R.R. Martin called āTales of Dunk and Eggā, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a direct adaptation of these short stories that narrate the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall (also known as Dunk) and Aegon V Targaryen (known as Egg).
Shhhh! Itās a secret that Egg is actually Prince Aegon V Targaryen. Following the death of his knight, Dunk, who was a squire, picks up the greatsword and becomes Ser Duncan the Tall. He stumbles across Egg during his adventures, and together, the duo travels the Seven Kingdoms for coin, glory, and love.
The problem that this series will likely face is that the timeline during Tales of Dunk and Egg is set roughly 50 years AFTER the events of House of the Dragon. Do you see the issue yet?
Well, thatās actually where the problem lies. There havenāt been any confirmed reports as to when House of the Dragon Season 3 will be released. With the second season ramping things up, the third season is expected to be the final season for the Targaryen civil war.Ā
Of course, I have read the books and know who will be standing when the dust settles, but there are millions of fans who do not know the aftermath of the Targaryen Civil War.
That is exactly where A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms picks up from. Set 50 years after the events of the Targaryen Civil War, the tales of Dunk and Egg will be set in a completely new timeline, which will essentially bridge the gap between House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones.
The only problem is that House of the Dragon hasnāt exactly wrapped up. So, the ābridgeā is already made, but the road connecting the bridge hasnāt been entirely finished. HBO Entertainment could potentially avoid the whole timeline issue with a simple solution, but that solution also comes at a price.
Well, it all depends on the script that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will have. They could use the genius move of not talking about the Targaryen rule during the timeline of the first season of A Knight of Seven Kingdoms, or they could simply not focus on the lords and ladies at all.
In fact, Dunk was a lowborn, and it would make sense if they took the time to set up the character of Dunk from the ground up while ignoring the games of the big folk in Kingās Landing and various parts of Westeros.
Whatever happens, HBO will need to be careful regarding the release of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, or else, they would essentially spoil the entire plot of House of the Dragon in the first season itself.
