The Origins of Kargil Vijay Diwas

Kargil Vijay Diwas traces its roots to a turbulent period in Indo-Pak relations, marked by significant conflicts, including the 1971 war, which resulted in the creation of Bangladesh. Despite the signing of the Lahore Declaration in February 1999, which aimed to resolve the Kashmir issue peacefully, tensions soon escalated. In the winter of 1998-1999, Pakistani soldiers and militants infiltrated the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir, occupying strategic positions intended to disrupt the connection between Kashmir and Ladakh.

Operation Vijay and the Kargil Conflict

In May 1999, the Indian Army uncovered the infiltration, leading to the launch of Operation Vijay. The ensuing conflict, known as the Kargil War, involved fierce battles in the rugged mountainous terrain of the Kargil district and along the Line of Control (LoC) from May to July 1999. The Indian Army successfully reclaimed crucial positions, including Tiger Hill, after intense fighting. The war concluded on July 26, 1999, with India securing victory, though at a high cost, with nearly 490 personnel losing their lives.
