Atlético Madrid was founded in 1903 by a group of Basque students. The club played its first official match on February 8, 1903, against Athletic Bilbao, which they lost 3-2. In the 1950s and 1960s, they won several domestic titles and reached the European Cup final twice, but were beaten on both occasions.
