India is a country passionate about cricket, with budding talents hailing from every corner of the nation. Recognizing this potential and the need to nurture it, Sikkim's Chief Minister, Prem Singh Tamang, has taken a pivotal step towards strengthening the state's sporting infrastructure. Tamang has recently inaugurated the Center of Excellence - a state-of-the-art institution dedicated to fostering cricket talent within the state.
The Center's inception reflects a commitment to creating a platform that fuels young cricketing talent, offering them an environment furnished with superior infrastructure, advanced training amenities, and sports science support. The Center's overarching objective is to mould the future of cricket, imparting comprehensive training to promising young cricketers under the guidance of skilled coaches and staff.

The Center of Excellence, a high-tech training facility for budding cricketers, was inaugurated on the grounds of the Sikkim Cricket Association in the Pakyong district's Mining area. This strategically situated centre encompasses a clubhouse, a rainwater reservoir, and an off-side cafe. These facilities cater not only to the athletic needs of cricket enthusiasts but also provide recreational spaces for relaxation and socializing.
The idea for the Center was initially proposed by Chief Minister Tamang during the SICA Men's A Division tournament finals in March 2023. The Center began its operations with 12 students and, due to an overwhelming response, has now expanded to 24 students, evenly split between boys and girls.
Incorporating Green Practices

Under the Central Ground Water Authority Guidelines, the Center of Excellence has implemented an artificial recharge of groundwater and rainwater harvesting system. This system is a noteworthy addition to the Center, demonstrating its commitment to sustainable practices.
The system not only allows effective rainwater harvesting but also ensures the sustainable maintenance of the cricket pitches, which typically consume a large amount of water. These efforts underline the Center's dedication to creating an eco-friendly sports infrastructure.
Chief Minister Tamang has publicly expressed his vision of fostering cricketing talents who could rival cricket legends such as Sachin Tendulkar and Mahendra Singh Dhoni. His optimism is not unfounded, given the exceptional facilities and opportunities the Center of Excellence offers. Tamang's ambitions for Sikkim’s cricket echo the history of the Sikkim Cricket Association itself, which since its establishment in 1987, has shown steady growth, thanks to the efforts of multiple presidents and executive bodies.
The Lease Renewal and Recognition

Tamang, during his tenure as Sports Minister from 2007 to 2010, played a crucial role in renewing the lease for the Mining Ground, which belongs to the Mines and Geology Department. This lease renewal was pivotal in ensuring the continuity of the Sikkim Cricket Association and its activities. Further, he highlighted the legal challenge faced by SICA for its recognition. The case, filed in the Sikkim High Court, resulted in a judgment that ensured the annual financial assistance of 50 Lakhs to the Association, bolstering its resources significantly.
Girls' Cricket Academy

Reminiscing about Sikkim's cricket history, Tamang recollected the establishment of a girls' cricket academy in 2007. This academy was funded by contributions and played a vital role in encouraging female participation in cricket. Many members from this academy had opportunities to participate in the National Cricket Academy and even compete in Ranji Trophies. The Center of Excellence aims to further this legacy by promoting gender-balanced cricket opportunities.
The Center of Excellence is not just a cricket training facility; it's a testament to the state's commitment to nurturing talent and promoting sports as a viable career. With its sophisticated infrastructure, skilled coaching, and sustainable practices, the Center is poised to shape the future of cricket in Sikkim, offering promising cricket enthusiasts a launchpad to their dreams.
