In the rugged terrains of the Kargil district in Jammu and Kashmir, between May and July 1999, India and Pakistan locked horns in what became one of the most intense wars in the history of the two nations. The conflict arose due to Pakistan's infiltration into Indian territory, aiming to cut off the crucial Leh-Ladakh highway. This war was unique as it was fought at an altitude of 16,000 feet, under inhospitable weather conditions, making it one of the most challenging terrains for warfare.

The Kargil War saw the valiant efforts of the Indian Armed Forces, who faced seemingly insurmountable odds to recapture the peaks and ridges taken over by Pakistani infiltrators. Over 500 Indian soldiers laid down their lives to ensure victory for the nation. Kargil Vijay Diwas is, therefore, an occasion to pay homage to these brave souls and to remember their sacrifices.
