Guru Purnima has a rich historical and spiritual significance rooted in Hinduism and Buddhism. It is said that on this day, Lord Shiva became the first Guru, or 'Adi Guru,' by starting the transmission of yoga to the Saptarishis, the seven celebrated rishis. The day also commemorates the great sage Maharishi Veda Vyasa who edited the four Vedas and wrote the 18 Puranas, the Mahabharata, and the Srimad Bhagavatam. Vyasa is considered the greatest of all gurus and the festival is often referred to as Vyasa Purnima in his honour. For Buddhists, this day holds importance as it is believed that after attaining enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, Buddha gave his first sermon on this day in Sarnath, known as the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta.

Gurus or teachers enlighten us, guiding us through the path of knowledge, helping us grow, and showing us the right direction in life. On Guru Purnima, people pay homage to their gurus. It's a day when students, irrespective of their age, express gratitude and respect towards their teachers. This festival is widely celebrated in educational institutions and spiritual centres.
