History of Engineers Day

Engineers Day was first celebrated in India in 1968, when the government of India declared September 15 as the national day to commemorate the birth anniversary of M. Visvesvaraya. He was born on September 15, 1861, in Muddenahalli, Karnataka. He earned recognition as a distinguished civil engineer, scholar, and visionary who had a profound impact on the development of India. He was involved in several major projects, such as the construction of the Krishna Raja Sagar Dam in Mysore, the design and patenting of automatic weir water floodgates, and the establishment of engineering colleges and institutions. He also served as the Diwan of Mysore from 1912 to 1918, during which he initiated many reforms in education, agriculture, commerce, and public works. In 1955, he received the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honour in India. He passed away in 1962 at the age of 100.
